When Dow Chemical needed to communicate a new management initiative at the Sadara facility — one of the largest chemical complexes ever constructed — they turned to us.

The project took our crew to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where we filmed at the Sadara facility in 4K widescreen on a RED Epic cinema camera. The production challenge was significant: we needed to convey the sheer scale of an industrial operation unlike anything most viewers have encountered, while also capturing the personal, human dimensions of the walkabout management program at the center of the story.

That balance — grand and intimate, sweeping and personal — defines the approach we brought to every frame. Wide shots establish the extraordinary scope of the facility. Closer moments between construction foremen and their teams communicate the philosophy behind the program. Together, they tell a story about how people and process work together at the highest level of industrial complexity.

One of the things that is most amazing about the Sadara program is its size and complexity. It is astounding to drive this site, to see how much we've accomplished. The physical layout of the facility measures two kilometers by three kilometers. The facility will produce three and a half million tons of product every year. Employees from over 32 nations are coming together in Saudi Arabia to staff the Sadara project. One of the things we find, we're working with construction companies from all over the world, and trying to get to the same mindset or attitude is difficult. And you can accelerate that by doing the walkabout program. Afternoon, guys. Welcome to the safety walk in the 778 area. Focusing on heat stress and focusing on rebar impalement protection, right? And by basically getting ourselves together at this regular time, you start getting to see people align. All right, guys. Let's take a walk.

And this is what we do. We go to the field now. We see a problem. We bring the worker over. We discuss it with him. It's not to browbeat that contractor. It's to coach him. Sometimes you'll go out there and you'll find somebody who's doing a really good job, or you find a group of people that's doing a really good job. I get the whole team together, we get the supervisor, and we recognize all of them at that one time. Do me a favor- Sure. Give that gentleman a phone card and explain to him why he's getting it. For proper PPE and being on his STA and doing the right thing- Sure... just because it's the right thing. Okay. And they really appreciate that. It's a little thing, but it means a lot. And then when we come back, we have really good dialogues with each other, and you talk about things you see in the field, and you go fix them. It's about developing relationships on a first-name basis with foremen, with workers. It's about every day going out to the field. It's about every day reinforcing the positive behaviors. Being interested in what they're doing and being interested in their safety, that creates a bond of trust and respect between each other. If we can produce that culture onto a workforce here, it will just, just absolutely astounding what people can do. We've got a high safety record here. And the commitment from each one of these guys that you've got working around you, that in itself is breeding that culture. Then the ultimate goal is zero injury, zero incidents. BIF, beyond injury free. That's the ultimate goal.
